Are You in Your Comfort Zone or Your Zone of Genius?

    By Kate Krake

    Author Mindset, Creativity, Writing Practice

Are you in your Comfort Zone or in your Zone of Genius? The distinction between these two zones can be subtle, even overlapping, yet understanding the differences can transform our writing practices, can transform our lives.

    What Is The Comfort Zone

The Comfort Zone is a good thing. The Comfort Zone is where we live and work with what resonates most easily with us. The Comfort Zone is where we find our authentic selves.

The Comfort Zone can also be a not so good thing.

The Comfort Zone is also where we might stagnate, where we could get trapped and stop growing, never realizing our potentials beyond what’s familiar and easy.

I’ve already written about How To Expand Your Comfort Zone here.

A Note About Pushing Limits and Different Comfort Zones

For the sake of clarity, in this article I’m talking about the Comfort Zone as it relates to our work as writers. This is ideas, styles, creative choices like genres, and the like. We all have multiple Comfort Zones (e.g. sensory Comfort Zones, energetic Comfort Zones, social and emotional Comfort Zones etc.) and for many of us, pushing against these thresholds can cause such intense discomfort that we’re unable to even think about anything, let alone push into any potential Zone of Genius with our creative writing.

I am neurodivergent. If I’m at or beyond my thresholds of what feels good in my body, in my surroundings, in my immediate emotions, there’s no point me even trying to write so I put my energy into restoring those other Comfort Zones before resuming any creative work. I’ll never suggest anyone push their comforts beyond what they intuitively know to be their true limits.

    The Zone of Genius

I’m using “The Zone of Genius” as borrowed from Gay Hendrick’s influential book, The Big Leap.

While I have my criticisms of that book on numerous levels, the core concept of the zones Hendricks talks about is a valuable lens through which to think about our lives.

The essence of it goes like this…

We have four zones: Incompetence; Competence, Excellence, Genius.

Incompetence is the stuff we’re not good at. Competence is the stuff we’re ok at. Excellence is the stuff we’re good at.

Genius is the stuff we excel at, what we’re truly best at. This genius zone isn’t just about being very good at what you do; it’s about being exceptional and innovative.

Hendricks suggests that we usually live too much in our Competence and Excellence zones, because they’re comfortable, but rarely push into the Zone of Genius, which Hendricks claims is unfortunate, because it’s the Zone of Genius where success on all levels is found.

So, if the Comfort Zone is where we write with what’s most aligned with what we like and who we are, and the Zone of Genius is most aligned with what we’re truly best at, what’s the difference?

A Note On Contentment and Defining Success

I do think it’s entirely possible to be marvellously successful in our comfortable Excellence Zones, it all comes down to how success is personally defined. If you’re truly quite happy and content in your cozy, Comfort Zone, then there’s no reason to push out of that. If you feel you could be reaching for some higher growth, then read on.

The Comfort Zone: Familiar, Honest but Limiting

The Comfort Zone is a cozy, predictable place where we feel safe and at ease. For writers, this might be a specific genre, style, or routine that comes effortlessly. It’s where your skills and habits are well-practiced, and the risks of failure are minimal. Within this space, you produce good work consistently, receiving positive feedback and maintaining a steady rhythm.

However, while the Comfort Zone provides stability, it can also become a creative cage. When you linger too long, you might feel a sense of stagnation. The familiar patterns that once felt comforting can become repetitive and boring, leading to a plateau in your growth. The thrill of discovery fades, and you might yearn for something more, something different.

The Zone of Genius: A Space for Growth and Innovation

The Zone Of Genius is the realm where your unique talents, passions, and experiences converge to create something extraordinary.

It’s where you push boundaries, take risks, and explore uncharted territories.

In the Zone Of Genius, you harness your innate strengths just like in the Comfort Zone, but the key difference is that the Zone of Genius promotes growth by embracing challenges that stretch your abilities.

It’s a place of both confidence and vulnerability. You’re confident in your skills but vulnerable to the uncertainties that come with stepping into new territory.

This dynamic balance is where a supercharged magical well of creativity lies.

    Merging Comfort with Genius

The Comfort Zone and the Zone Of Genius are entwined. The Comfort Zone is where you start. The Zone of Genius is the dynamic process of expansion.

Once you get well practiced in whatever you’ve expanded to, your Zone of Genius then becomes your Comfort Zone and needs to be pressed again.

    Stepping Beyond the Familiar

To transition from our Comfort Zone to our Zone of Genius, we need to embrace the unknown. We need to listen to that often quiet and small voice inside that is prompting us to a different path toward a new horizon.

This requires a willingness to experiment, to fail, and to learn from those failures. It’s about pushing the boundaries of your creativity and exploring new ideas, styles, and genres. For most of us, in the beginning, this will initially feel uncomfortable. That’s the point: you’re un-Comfort Zoning.

What are you bored with in your writing?

What projects have you been avoiding because they seem too daunting?

What new techniques or styles have you been curious about but hesitant to try?

These are the questions that unlock the doors to the Zone of Genius.
